GRADE 9 Leadership Roles
I was the first Grade 9 student in the history of Kahaani UWCSEA East’s annual student-led dance production that celebrates Indian culture and raises funds for the school’s Kolkata Global Concern, which supports people with disabilities in Kolkata to be selected as a dance lead. As a leader, I was responsible for choreographing a piece based on the year’s theme, training a group of 30 boys and girls, conceptualizing and teaching the entire performance, and coordinating costume selection and organization. It was an extraordinary opportunity for a 14-year-old, but a testament to the leadership, creativity, and responsibility I demonstrated qualities that earned me the trust and confidence of the Kahaani lead team.
I was recognized for my leadership for a unique opportunity to co-lead an after-school ECA, teaching dance to students from Grades 2 to 5. Traditionally reserved for senior students, this program invited me, a Grade 9 student, to join the team and introduce the classical dance form Odissi alongside the older leaders. This marked the first time a Grade 9 student was offered such a role, a testament to my talent, maturity, and ability to inspire and guide younger learners.
Selected as the Vice Chair of the Student Voice Team in Grade 9, I had the opportunity to grow as a leader—guiding discussions, supporting my peers, and contributing to meaningful improvements within the school community.
Selected as Football Student Leader for Junior School Boys, where I led and supported training sessions, guided younger players, and helped develop their skills and confidence. I focused on encouraging teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship, while leading by example on and off the field. This role strengthened my leadership, responsibility, and ability to motivate others in a structured training environment.
At 14, I was given the opportunity by my respected dance teacher, Guru Chitra Shankar, to choreograph an Odissi contemporary piece and lead a team of 8–9 dancers for a performance at the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore. I created the choreography, taught it to my peers, and guided them through rehearsals while bringing the performance together as a team. This experience shaped my confidence and taught me the value of responsibility, encouragement, and teamwork in leadership.
